While taking me down memory lane of a beloved place that holds strong childhood memories for me, this book was also a playful and inviting way for me to introduce the sights and scenes of one of my favorite cities in the world to my child. A fun read-aloud with inviting illustrations, the rhyming text is also accessible enough for a beginning reader to take on. The book would be a great addition to the library of Indian-American families like mine, as well as families looking to introduce their children to global cultures. The invitations for interactivity in the book are a nice touch as well.
Mumbai is a city that is actually very fascinating to visit. There are so many sights to see, things to do, and foods to eat. I have visited Mumbai as a teenage tourist, but it's literally been years since I have last seen any of those amazing locations. So when I opened this book to read to my son, I was surprised to find myself transported to that summer, when I saw each landmark live. We follow the touristy adventure of 2 children (a boy and a girl) and Tevra, the tiger. I wonder if there are more Tevra the Tiger books. I certainly hope so. From the moment the team arrives, they are visiting each of the well known landmarks, as well as other local people locations, like the train station and food stands.
The writing attempts to follow a bit of rhyme, but some of the rhymes fell a little flat. But I am not in the mood to judge harshly upon that, because the art is clearly the selling point of this book. It is well-realized, colorful, and attractive for young children. In fact, since we've added this to our collection, this has been my son's go-to book. The auto rickshaws, taxis, boats, and trains fascinate him to no end (clearly he's well in his transportation obsession stage).
I can see young children enjoying this book very much. The colors, characters, locations, are all eye-catching for early readers, and the rhymes aren't too corny for them. As an adult reader, I also learned so many new facts about Mumbai. Even after re-reading this multiple times, I still manage to find something new on each page. I would like to see a book like this for every major Indian city.

My son (3.5 year old) always picks this book. He adores the illustrations and I am so excited to visit Mumbai and show him the sites! Looking forward to the next book in the series!
