Parents who dont trust the Govt for anything are happy to send their kids into harms way for who knows what. Bizarre.
All part of the legacy of that clown Reagan, the ultimate empty suit, he of trickle down economics, driving disrespect of Govt wihout even knowing what it does, who brought crack cocaine to LA to help the ultimately , of course, unsuccesful Contra war. They should have a new Mount Rushmore with Ronnie, Dubya and Donald the three most incompetent presidents, so far.

I was already coming to a conclusion that things were getting too nostalgic for the 1950s; and that I grew up watching stories of wealth and war. Now I know why. I grew up in a culture that was in self-denial about the 60s and now has manifested itself in 1950s xenophobia, anti-communism, and dreams of (mostly white) suburbia. And we've told ourselves its okay to always be at war, and its alright to pursue shuffling money as important work.
The overall thesis is an interesting thought on why we are in this political quagmire today. Well thought out and compelling
Especially if you're a child of the 80s this book explains how the forces that were moving through our society at that time shaped current thinking. You'll be amazed at some of the connections that are drawn. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.
Sirota had me from the moment he talked about how he and his brothers heard their upbringing through the titillating expressions of TV series and Hollywood movies of the 80's. I remember listening to my two nephews conspiring and railing one another in a similar manner. The techniques and memes of the media's onslaught were inherent in the liveliness and silliness of their humorous way to make contact with one another but keeping everyone else out. Kids have accomplished this method in each generation, This time they were using the comedy of the military fiasco in Vietnam as content. It was a time of national morning and our kids were doing it for us. They heard the pathetic wailing of all the broken down super soldiers, the modified weapons of mass destructionplanes, trains and automobiles. The president was a Hollywood product using dandified one-liners and encouraging other Grade B actors and actresses to do the same. But the grief was ignored and the sadness remained. It still does. If anyone cares about this country we will have to find a method of dealing with the almost inconsolable grief 3 decades later which is still being bandied about as American goodness and righteousness. We of average intelligence will continue to fight until the gross sadness with which we have been bequeathed is transformed into a suitable (honest) happiness by coming to grips with the melancholy residing in our chests and the grief of being bamboozled by institutions and the persons who run them.
As a child of the 80s, I was naturally blissfully ignorant of the deeper meaning of the majority of my entertainment, and I have only the vaguest memories of the major issues I heard mentions of when I accidentally caught a fragment of the news. This book gives me a better understanding of the world I grew up in, and it illuminates the impact of that time and culture on my entire generation.

Beyond the significance of the book, though, I must also praise it as highly readable and entertaining, absorbing and engaging. I was compelled to keep reading from the moment I picked it up. It makes its arguments persuasively and with great style.
